How much does each language earn your Shopify store?

You translated your store into German and French. It cost you time, maybe money. So: is it paying off? Shopify knows the language of every order; you just have to know where to look.

Every order remembers its language

When a customer checks out, Shopify records the language they used. That makes it possible to add up your sales per language, and to set that against what each language costs you to keep translated. Most merchants never look, and keep paying for languages without knowing what they bring in.

Three ways to find out

Shopify Analytics. Build a sales report and group it by the order’s language or by market. If you sell to one country per language, markets are a decent stand-in.

An order export. Export your orders to a spreadsheet and group them by language. Fine once a quarter, a bit much every week.

Your translation app. Unlost shows the sales in your translated languages right on its dashboard: the total, and per language the amount and the number of orders. Cancelled orders and refunds are left out, so the number is what you actually earned.

What to do with the numbers

A language with steady orders deserves to be complete and current, so check new products there first. A language with no orders after a few months probably needs more than translation: shipping to that country, local payment methods, or a market set up in Shopify. And put the sales next to the cost. For most stores, keeping a language translated costs less than a single order brings in.
